Greg Maddux has retired, but his longtime teammate Tom Glavine continues to work toward a comeback in 2009. Glavine, who had surgery to repair an elbow tendon in August, is playing catch again, and threw from 90 feet for the first time Monday.

Rafael Furcal has picked the Braves over the Athletics, writes Ken Rosenthal. Assuming Atlanta closes the deal, this would give the Braves the kind of depth needed to pursue Jake Peavy -- if they choose to do so; they could re-install Yunel Escobar into a proposal for Peavy.

The Braves tried once to make a deal for Peavy and failed, and they tried and failed to sign A.J. Burnett, and there really are no pitchers remaining on the free-agent market of the ilk of CC Sabathia or Burnett -- big arms who can dominate hitters. So rather than spend on a second-tier free agent, it makes sense for the Braves to come up with another way to use their available money -- such as signing Furcal and creating the flexibility with Escobar to pursue someone like Peavy or Roy Oswalt.
