Will Bush throw a pardon to Clemens?

• Speaking of politics: CC Sabathia and his wife Amber have tickets to the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama, and will attend some of the postinaugural events, as well. • Kris Benson is going to throw for scouts on Jan. 24, and in the week after that, it's likely Mark Mulder -- who, like Benson, is represented by agent Gregg Clifton -- will throw off a mound for scouts. Two advance scouts say they think Mulder could be the hidden gem of this free-agent class, because if he can restore his arm angle -- and that's been the focus of his offseason work -- he could be a very effective pitcher for relatively little money. • Pedro Alvarez, the Pirates' No. 1 pick, arrived at minicamp out of shape, in the eyes of Pittsburgh management. I spent some time over the past week at Vanderbilt, the college which Alvarez (and I) attended, and on campus, among former teammates, conditioning is the greatest concern for Alvarez, going forward -- whether he can stay in good enough shape to stay at third base.
