College hoops chatter from around the country

A quick look at some of the things I'm hearing around the college basketball world • Houston recently hired Mack Rhoades as its athletic director, which no doubt got the attention of UH coach Tom Penders. The veteran coach has won 23 games in each of the past two seasons, but has yet to make the NCAA tournament in his five years with the Cougars. So what does the hiring of Rhoades have to do with any of that? Before running the athletic department at Akron, Rhoades was an assistant AD at UTEP at a time when Billy Gillispie was helping revive a dormant program. Gillispie -- who also coached at Texas A&M before heading to Kentucky -- is currently living in Dallas, and it's no secret in the Lone Star State that he is keeping an eye on the situations at Houston and Texas Tech. Expect to see Billy Clyde at a ton of Texas high school events this upcoming school year, and don't be surprised if he eventually ends up back in a Texas college arena somewhere.
