Manning is starting free safety

In a move first reported by the team's official website, Chicago Bears defensive back Danieal Manning is now the starting free safety, in addition to serving as the nickel back in passing situations.

Sources say Manning was informed of the news in a meeting with Lovie Smith on Tuesday.

Kevin Payne remains the starting strong safety, with Craig Steltz now challenging for Payne's job. Steltz also will move to free safety when the team shifts to its nickel package.
