Smoltz manufactures a comeback

John Smoltz is a friend and golfing partner of Tiger Woods, which is hardly surprising, because the two men are similar in many ways. Both are superlative athletes and, rather than being repelled by pressure, both are naturally drawn to big moments, like 3-year-olds to a birthday cake. And both men seem skilled at generating a competitive chip, something many great players do. When David Cone played with the Yankees, he and Tino Martinez occasionally would pull out the media guide of the team they were about to face, look up the biographies of opposing players and essentially invent reasons to hate them. He's from South Dakota? Well, I can't stand South Dakota. Or: That guy's hair is awful. What a loser. What a jerk. I can't stand him. In this way, they could manufacture an edge.
