Why Greinke should win the Cy Young
Updated: August 31, 2009, 12:25 PM ETBy Buster Olney
By the standards of a David Wells or Livan Hernandez or John Smoltz or Orlando Hernandez or Curt Schilling or Randy Johnson, Zack Greinke has yet to pitch in a meaningful game in his life. He has yet to take the mound with the whole world watching, with an entire summer's work on the line, with an entire season hinging on whether he can command his fastball and his secondary pitches are sharp. Greinke has never experienced anything close to that pressure, and he won't in September or October, either, because the magic number for the Royals' elimination is already at 14, and we haven't reached September. Meanwhile, the Tigers' Justin Verlander will pitch in games that really matter in the five weeks ahead, as will the Yankees' CC Sabathia.
