Time to make some picks
I had a shaky opening week going against the line; I went one under .500, 8-9 in games on the board. The good: picking Oklahoma State to handle Georgia; the bad: picking San Jose State to not get blown off the field; the ugly: picking Ohio State to roll over Navy. This week's guesses:
Fun matchup of two teams led by talented running backs. Tech's Jonathan Dwyer has been more productive and consistent, while Clemson's C.J. Spiller has had more highlight-reel runs. I like Tech's triple-option offense to wear down a Tigers defense that was solid against the run in 2008 but won't be quite up to this challenge. History is not on Clemson's side, either -- the Tigers are 1-8 in prime time Thursday games. The pick is Georgia Tech 30, Clemson 20.
The Buffs have a bad trend staring at them: They've lost three consecutive nonconference road games. But none of those losses was against a team with as bad a run defense as the Rockets'. Expect CU to respond with an inspired effort in an almost "win big or else" fashion for coach Dan Hawkins. I think the CU O-line will take over this game. The pick is Colorado 28, Toledo 17.
SU DT Arthur Jones -- who dominated in the win over Notre Dame last season -- might cause some problems for the rebuilt PSU O-line early, but Cuse QB Greg Paulus will find the speed and athleticism of the Nittany Lions' front seven to be a major upgrade from the bunch he faced last Saturday against Minnesota. Expect PSU to force the former point guard into a lot of mistakes. The pick is Penn State 35, Syracuse 13.To see the rest of Bruce's picks, including ND-Michigan, USC-OSU and his trap game of the week, you must be an ESPN Insider.
