Were the Red Sox in on Holliday?

There were a couple of interesting tweets from reporters Friday afternoon that suggest the Red Sox may have been in on left fielder Matt Holliday, who is represented by Scott Boras, before signing John Lackey.

ESPN's Buster Olney tweeted the following:

Heard this: Before the Red Sox signed Lackey for $82.5 million, they offered $82.5 million to Holliday. Now they're out on Holliday.
