Figgins at second base would add value
There's interesting news from Seattle Mariners camp, where the team will apparently see if Jose Lopez can handle playing third base. That would move new acquisition Chone Figgins over to second base. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said there's nothing etched in stone, but the fact the team is thinking this way is compelling, and like most everything else in real baseball, there are fantasy baseball repercussions.
Figgins, by most measures, is a very good third baseman, and has played a strong second base in the past as well. Lopez would be the issue, but it's not like he's Ryne Sandberg at second base anyway. Hey, the Mariners might just want better defense up the middle, which makes perfect sense. That helps their pitchers. It's a terrific defensive team already with Jack Wilson, Franklin Gutierrez, Ichiro Suzuki et al. Let's just say I don't see Cliff Lee trying to strike 200 hitters out. He doesn't need to with arguably the majors' best defense behind him.
