Slater, Fanning advance at Quiksilver Pro

Rookies stand out as well in fickle conditions at Snapper Rocks

The first day of competition at the Quiksilver Pro on Australia's Gold Coast was held Saturday (Australian time) in somewhat fickle, shoulder-to-head-high surf at Snapper Rocks. With a light-but-steady southeast wind blowing and a rip current that grew increasingly challenging through the day, several of the World Tour's top seeds advanced to Round 3, while a few more are left to battle it out in head-to-head competition in Round 2.
