Maybin's sleeper status still on hold for now

The supposed haul the Florida Marlins received a few years ago in the Miguel Cabrera trade hasn't quite worked out for them yet. And comments made Thursday by Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez about "center fielder of the future" Cameron Maybin didn't indicate that that will change anytime soon:

"I haven't assured anybody in that outfield other than Cody [Ross] and [Chris] Coghlan that they've made the club. … Somebody could outplay somebody. I don't know what you guys are watching but there's a little animal, 'the worm.' He's not doing too bad."

Most fantasy baseball owners aren't yet acquainted with the player known as "The Worm," but Gonzalez is talking about prospect Michael Stanton, not to be confused with the longtime middle relief pitcher. There is little question the slugging outfielder has big-time power. He also strikes out quite a bit. Colleague Jason Grey ranked Stanton 63rd among his top 100 prospects for the 2010 season. While that rank doesn't seem to jibe with Stanton's power potential, it's because the kid is only 20 and unlikely to play in the majors until later in the season. Of course, his manager might not be following the same plan. Some have compared Stanton, a corner outfielder, to Ryan Howard, and he's off to a fine start this spring. Hmm, so Ross can play center field, Stanton can play right field … just sayin'!
