Whatever happened to Aviles, Buchholz?

Just one year ago, Mike Aviles was our No. 11-ranked shortstop and a $15 player, ranked ahead of Miguel Tejada and Jason Bartlett, among others, at his position. Sure, many fantasy baseball owners were expecting his fine rookie statistics to taper off a bit, but the guy clearly had game. He hit .325 in his first season for the Kansas City Royals, with 10 home runs and eight stolen bases in only 102 games. He was certainly someone worthy of standard-mixed-league attention.

Today Aviles is a forgotten fantasy option, currently owned in only 0.4 percent of ESPN standard leagues. Whatever happened to him? There are obvious reasons why people are overlooking him. He hit .183 last season. He's coming off Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow. The Royals traded for and intend to use Yuniesky Betancourt as their starting shortstop. These are all good reasons to avoid Aviles. Of course, I don't really buy any of them.
