Every year I try to identify a handful of players I think are ready to step forward in the upcoming season, usually players with significant tools or baseball skills who haven't fully translated them into performance. Last year's list included Justin Upton, Clayton Kershaw, and Adam Lind, as well as guys who showed flashes of potential but didn't fully break out like Jonathan Sanchez and Adam Jones. And just like last year's list, this year's is heavy on players who were drafted high, with seven of the 11 going in the top 15 overall picks of their respective drafts, a time when the emphasis is normally on athletic ability and long-term projection rather than immediate performance.
