Replacements at messy shortstop position

With two ownable National League shortstops in Yunel Escobar and Rafael Furcal hitting the disabled list in the past 24 hours, fantasy owners are reaching for help at a weak position. We figured in March that the shortstop position wasn't going to be gleaming with fantasy goodness, but with Escobar and Furcal joining the still-hurting Jimmy Rollins on the shelf, and a number of sleeper choices such as Alcides Escobar (zero attempted stolen bases!) and Alexei Ramirez underperforming, fantasy owners -- especially in NL-only formats -- are scrambling.
A month into the season there are six shortstops in the top 100 of the ESPN Fantasy Player Rater, with Hanley Ramirez near the top after his slow start, and Furcal still the No. 6 choice. For comparison sake, there were only six shortstops chosen in the top 100 of ESPN average live drafts, so I wouldn't consider this a disappointing start for the position. It's just that some of the names have changed.
To see why Juan Uribe and Mike Aviles might be worth picking up in your league, you must be an ESPN Insider.
