Jumbo Joe, justice and Nicklas Lidstrom
After another busy weekend of playoff hockey (can you believe we're almost through the second round?), here are 10 thoughts for the beginning of the work week.
1. Jumbo Joe: Joe Thornton was brilliant for the San Jose Sharks in their Game 5 clincher over the Detroit Red Wings. He scored the tying goal in the second period, putting the puck past Jimmy Howard after making a nice little toe-drag to give himself a clear shooting angle. And, in the third period, Jumbo Joe jumped all over a Brian Rafalski turnover, firing a quick pass to linemate Patrick Marleau, who one-timed the perfect feed past a helpless Howard. That proved to be the difference. Thornton also won 10 of 14 draws and delivered three hits to lead his team to the conference final. In the five-game series, he contributed three goals and five assists. Jumbo, indeed!
There's nine -- nine -- other observations after the jump here, including some good stuff on what the Blackhawks need to do, Brad Stuart, Nicklas Lidstrom, the Coyotes and more. For all of E.J.'s puck knowledge, become an Insider.
