• The struggles continue for Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman. Entrusted with a two-run lead Tuesday, Hoffman allowed a Scott Rolen home run, then a double, walk and Joey Votto single to lose the game. He didn't retire a hitter, and his season ERA after his fifth blown save is 13.15. The last time Hoffman gave up more than his current 19 earned runs in a full season was 2001.

Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson entered Tuesday as two of the top seven AL starting pitchers on the ESPN Player Rater, but then they combined to give up 14 earned runs, five home runs and 20 baserunners in nine messy innings of work. This would be a wise time to try to acquire each hurler cheap.
