What will Stevie do?
I don't think I've ever heard a new general manager introduced to such a rousing ovation as the one Steve Yzerman received with the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday. Not that it was anything Stevie Y hadn't heard before. His Hall of Fame playing career is well-documented.
Of course, after the craziness that was the two-year Oren Koules-Len Barrie ownership era, the gathered media and well-wishers might have cheered just about any clean-cut fellow in a suit.
Yzerman, obviously, is much more than just another suit. He stands among the most respected figures in the game. Quietly determined on the ice, he has already proved to be equally focused and competitive in an executive role, leading Team Canada to an Olympic gold medal under extreme pressure.
In Tampa, however, he won't have the luxury of picking a team from Canada's deep pool of talent. Here are three of his immediate challenges.
To see the three biggest challenges confronting Steve Yzerman, and get a glimpse of what went into the Florida Panthers' GM search, you must be an ESPN Insider.
