Boston's split decision on Ortiz

Hideki Matsui won the Most Valuable Player Award for the World Series, hit 28 homers and drove in 90 runs during the regular season and was very highly regarded as a teammate. And yet, in the end, the Yankees let him walk away as a free agent, without offering him arbitration, largely because of a chronic knee condition -- but also because the going rate for veteran designated hitters has gone down, which was borne out during the winter.
