Ryan Kalish: Nice skills -- and opportunity
A ninth-round pick out of a Red Bank Catholic (N.J.) High School in 2006, Kalish fell in the draft because of signability concerns, and his career got off to a slow start after he broke a hamate (hand) bone midway through his first full professional season in 2007, an injury that eventually required surgery. In 2008, he didn't really hit for much power as he continued recovering from the injury. Scouting reports at the time indicate he was tentative and hesitant to really "let go" with his swing (likely because he was still having pain there as part of the recovery), despite still handling the strike zone well and showing off his skills in other areas of the game.
