Bubba Starling, Charles Tilson impress
Wrapping up the 24th annual ESPN Rise Area Code Games, which concluded on Tuesday in Long Beach, Calif.:
• Charles Tilson was one of the three best position player prospects at the event, along with Blake Swihart and Bubba Starling. Tilson is a plus-runner who can play centerfield and hit the only home run of the event's first 16 games. (Blair Field is a notorious pitchers' park, and there's a running gag among scouts that if you hit a single home run at the Area Code Games, you go in the first round. I know of an exception or two, but there's a lot of truth in the meme.) Tilson had the broadest set of tools of the hitters in Long Beach; his arm would grade as a six on the scouting scale, he has good instincts on the bases and he has the ability to adjust his swing, going short for contact but staying back to drive a ball when he got a pitch he could pull. He's at New Trier High School near Chicago, and with Downers Grove RHP Nick Burdi and Valparaiso RHP Jerrick Suiter, it's looking like a good year for draft talent coming out of the greater Chicago area.
