Cincinnati Reds right-hander Edinson Volquez tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Milwaukee on Tuesday, allowing three singles and four walks. Since not escaping the first inning on Aug. 23, he's allowed four runs in 21 2/3 innings. He could return to his 17-win form of 2008 next season.

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander James Shields allowed five runs to the New York Yankees in the first inning Tuesday, but salvaged some of his day by going 5 1/3 innings with no extra damage. Shields fell to 13-13 with a 4.96 ERA, and while the 180 strikeouts are nice, little else is. Don't be so sure Shields bounces back in 2011, either.
