How to replace Knowshon Moreno
There's surprising late-breaking news on this Friday afternoon out of Denver Broncos camp, as Knowshon Moreno has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts after suffering an undisclosed injury during Friday's practice. What a lost opportunity this is for Moreno owners, who were licking their chops for this matchup against a team struggling to control the run. I already had selected Moreno in the Gridiron Challenge game for this fortuitous matchup. The Colts defended the run better in Week 2 against the New York Giants -- how could they be worse than they were against Arian Foster in Week 1? -- but still, they are an attractive opponent for a front-line running back, which Moreno is. For fantasy football, I had ranked him 11th for the week.
What lies in Moreno's future could be just as big a concern as what happens to the Broncos' running game in Week 3. Last week, he carried the football 24 times for 51 yards, hardly impressive, but scored a touchdown for the second consecutive week and added 67 yards on four receptions. I thought he was healthy and, like many fantasy owners, was eager to see him run on the Colts.
Let's assume Moreno is out for at least Week 3. The Broncos face the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens on the road after this week, then host the New York Jets. Moreno probably wouldn't have been a great fantasy option in that stretch anyway, but one has to wonder whether this ailment will hold him back for awhile.
For Eric's thoughts on who will get the bulk of the carries in Denver this week, you must be an ESPN Insider!
