Victor Martinez reveals Tigers' flaws
If the Detroit Tigers signed Victor Martinez to be their full-time catcher, as has been reported, they'll lose a fair amount on defense. They'll make it up on offense, though, because Martinez is incredibly productive for a backstop. If shifted to designated hitter, however, he's less valuable, at a cost of at least a win per year of production. With indications that Martinez will be more like the No. 2 catcher (behind Alex Avila), spending a lot of time at first base and DH, the Tigers won't get maximum bang for their buck on this contract.
