Coaching rumors and dominoes
Before we get into all of the questions about coaching searches, I'm beginning this week's mailbag with something on the bowl games.
Q: From @Thriller1977 -- Which non-BCS championship bowl game are you most looking fwrd to watching?
A: There are a bunch of really compelling match-ups atop my list. Outside of the five BCS games, I love the Capital One game with Bama and 11-1 Michigan State facing off. The Spartans have been really tough all year and now they face former MSU coach Nick Saban. The Big Ten needs to win these kinds of match-ups if it wants to close the perception gap with the SEC.
I also am curious about the Gator Bowl because Rich Rodriguez could be coaching to save his career at Michigan against a Miss. State team whose coach, Dan Mullen, is at the center of the UF coaching search.
The off-the-radar game I want to see most is the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. What you'll have is Nevada's Colin Kaepernick and that dynamic pistol attack going against a couple of great LBs in Luke Kuechly and Mark Herzlich from BC. Scheme-wise that should be fun.
Q: From @rtrobinson17 -- How big would a Gus Malzahn hire at Vandy be across the country?
A: It would be a big get for Vandy, especially since Malzahn's school is going to be in the national spotlight for the next month with the BCS title matchup on the horizon. I've heard from someone close to him that he's got a lot to think about.
Vandy has needed to upgrade facilities for a long time. Also, landing Malzahn got more complicated when Urban Meyer resigned. If Bobby Petrino were to get the UF job, Malzahn would have a good shot at taking over at Arkansas, while if Dan Mullen were to move on to Gainesville, Malzahn would figure to get a long look at MSU.
Q: From @heals11 -- Josh McDaneils ever coach college? His age, energy ... IMO he'd be great. Young guy like that in a recruit's house. Make sense?
For Bruce's full take, you need to be an Insider.
