Joe Mauer is a fantasy beast, but ...
I interviewed Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer on Wednesday for an upcoming Baseball Today podcast, and one of the things I wanted to know about was how the new Target Field in Minneapolis affected not only Mauer's production, but his head, too. We can see what it did to his bat: Mauer hit one home run at home in 2010, an opposite-field blast to left field Aug. 18 against Chicago White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd. That was it. In 2009, Mauer smacked 16 of his career-best 28 home runs at the Metrodome. Perhaps we all assumed Mauer's power would regress some -- he had never topped 13 home runs in a season prior to 2009 -- but to go back to single digits, let's just say fantasy owners didn't expect that.
