Ranking surprise league tourney teams
Every year there seems to be at least one team that makes a run during its conference tournament. Some teams that win two or even three tourney games fit the mold of squads that were picked during the preseason to finish much higher in the standings than they actually did, and with the end of the season upon them, only then do the players decide to put their individual agendas aside and compete. Others have had injuries or defections that actually made them more cohesive by season's end, and others still are tough matchups or have a guy who can carry a team to an upset all on his own.
With these things in mind, here are five teams that have the talent to pull off some upsets and emerge as surprise winners of their league tournaments:
The Canes have talent and have won six of nine with victories at the Boston College Eagles and over the Maryland Terrapins by 14. During the nine-game stretch they are shooting 45 percent from the floor. Frank Haith's job status appears to be relatively safe for now as a new athletic director would have to be very bold to make a move in his first week or so on the job, but finishing on a good note would be smart on Haith's part. With Malcolm Grant, Durand Scott and Adrian Thomas all playing pretty well, the Hurricanes have the talent to win a couple of games in the ACC tourney, just as they did last year.
