Tyler Anderson could be top-20 pick
There seem to be an inordinate number of prep pitchers touching the mid-90s with their fastballs, and in this week's Stock Watch, a Cuban right-hander who has touched 98 leads the pack of those improving their stock over the past week or two.
Also included is a prep catcher trying to prove that his bat will play at the next level, and a college southpaw that is starting draw some attention as a top-20 possibility.
On the other side of the coin, some potential first-round picks -- all college position players -- are showing some weaknesses.
Jose Fernandez, RHP, Alonso HS (Fla.)
Fernandez has pounded away with a 93-95 mph fastball that has reached as high as 98 this season, and complemented it with a power curveball that has been an above-average offering more often than not this season. He's big and strong at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, and is showing maturity, even beyond his slightly advanced age.
There is some effort in his delivery and he lands on a stiff front leg, which has scouts thinking he's likely to end up in the bullpen, but he's softened his landing and the arm action is clean, so there's a chance he remains a starter. Clubs convinced that's what he is are likely to consider him in the first round.
Tyler Anderson, LHP, Oregon Ducks
Anderson has notched double digits in strikeouts in each of his past four starts, thanks to a fastball that has been more consistently in the 91-94 mph range than a year ago, and a slider that has more tilt and a sharper break than in the past. He'll throw a changeup with some sink, but he sells it with good arm speed. His delivery is athletic and fluid despite funky action with his plant leg before he lands.
Anderson's performance has been against fairly strong competition early, which has him up several spots in the latest Future Fifty rankings.
