Five easy ways to pick up the pace

Sure, not all of us need to maintain a Usain Bolt pace (or anything close to it) on our morning run. But there are still plenty of ways for us to speed things up -- burning more calories, working more muscles or working up more of a sweat -- on the pavement, in the pool or on the bike.

My motto for races comes down to something a park ranger once said to me jokingly about wild animal encounters: You don't have to be the fastest runner in your group, you just don't want to be the slowest. Still, who doesn't want a quicker mile? So I was psyched to attend the Multisport World 2011 conference earlier this month in New York City, where elite athletes and experts shared their secrets. Here, the coolest step-it-up tips I heard. (They're for runners, cyclists and swimmers.)
