IndyCar rolls into NASCAR country

LEEDS, Ala. - The American South is traditionally a stronghold of NASCAR oval racing, but INDYCAR is proving that the land of Dixie can be a hotbed for open-wheel road racing as well.

The IZOD IndyCar Series ran its inaugural race at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala., a year ago, and by all accounts the event was a success. Marco Andretti starred, but Helio Castroneves won an interesting, strategy-driven race in front of an appreciative capacity crowd.
