Year of the grind
SAN FRANCISCO -- Bruce Bochy told reporters Friday that the Giants are thinking about having Pablo Sandoval work a couple of days behind home plate, and the reason for this is self-evident. With the loss of Buster Posey's production, the Giants are seeking ways to score more runs, and if they squeeze Sandoval into the lineup as a catcher on one or two turns through a rotation, they could have a more potent bat at third base.
A nice theory. But now the Giants could be looking for a way to squeeze more offense out of second base, in the aftermath of Freddy Sanchez's shoulder injury. Yet again, a particularly crucial member of the San Francisco lineup -- a player who, like Posey, is valued because of his unusual offensive contribution relative to his position -- was helped off the field.
