BCS hope remains for Ducks, Irish
The Oregon Ducks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish can still make noise in the BCS
The first weekend of the college football season is in the books, and many games appeared to go according to plan. Certainly Mother Nature disrupted that order in a few places, and a few teams surprised with performances that didn't quite match preseason expectations.
But how much stock can we put in the results of the first weekend?
History can help us answer the question, especially for fans of teams whose Week 1 performances left something to be desired. Overreaction can be common after opening weekend, and it would be foolish to think that every performance painted an accurate picture of the remaining college football season.
First, we need to understand and evaluate what really happened in each game and keep in mind that some recent examples prove why an early-season loss won't necessarily derail the title hopes of a preseason favorite.
In the case of the Oregon Ducks, there is reason to believe that their preseason goals of a BCS bowl appearance -- and possibly even an appearance in the BCS title game -- are still attainable.
