Top 10 moments of 2011
An unforgettable year for Mexican soccer brought along a slew of unforgettable moments. This was a year that many Mexico fans hope will spring the team onto bigger and better things. Narrowing down the best moments was not easy. We did our best. These are the El Tri blog's top 10 Mexican senior national team moments of the year:
1. Giovani Dos Santos' goal against the United States in Gold Cup final
With slightly less than 15 minutes remaining in a tense final match against the United States, Dos Santos brilliantly dribbled around a sprawling U.S. keeper Tim Howard and then flicked a shot that just tucked into the net to give Mexico the goal that sealed the Gold Cup championship.
Dos Santos' remarkable goal, which was nominated by FIFA as a choice for goal of the year, was not only the clincher, but it also served to illustrate the vast difference in attacking skill between the two teams. Mexico's Gold Cup final win also served as a loud warning to its rivals to the north that a new era was possibly dawning: the arrival of a young group of standout stars ready to secure dominance in the region.
