Strategy: When to draft starting pitchers

In 2011, the average major league team hit .255 and scored 694 runs. Some teams scored a lot more than that (Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers), while others crossed the plate quite a bit less (Mariners, Giants, Padres). But those were the averages, and they were down a bit from 2010.

In 2009, the average team hit .262 and scored 747 runs, continuing a trend from previous seasons. In 2007, there was an average of 777 runs scored per team. In other words, over the past two seasons, run scoring has been way down, the lowest it has been in quite some time. Yet it seems like fantasy baseball owners are still drafting as if it's 2002, when sluggers were plentiful. It's not 2002 anymore, even at the first-base position, and there aren't enough sluggers to go around.
