Impact of Diamondbacks outfield injuries

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Chris Young on the disabled list Wednesday, and it's certainly possible that Justin Upton will join him at some point. Young is an annual 20-homer/20-steal guy who was off to a very good start, and Upton was a second-round pick in most fantasy leagues and a real-life MVP candidate. One might think the defending NL West champions are in big trouble without one and perhaps both of these fellows.

Well, this is why they play the games. With Gerardo Parra still in town and A.J. Pollock having been summoned from Triple-A, I think the Diamondbacks are pretty lucky they believe in depth. That's not to say the offense won't take a hit in terms of power, and perhaps Jason Kubel will start hitting soon, but Parra is an elite defensive outfielder, and last season he contributed a .292 batting average over 141 games, with eight home runs and 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts. He's not an offensive star, but he's a suitable replacement if you need a safe batting average -- it will go up from its current .240 mark -- and the occasional steal.
