LOS ANGELES -- Since they won their Stanley Cup in 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks have had trouble keeping their assistant general manager position occupied as rebuilding teams look to their organization for help.

The Minnesota Wild raided the Pittsburgh Penguins in hiring their assistant GM, Chuck Fletcher, in 2009 while Pittsburgh was on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. The Tampa Bay Lightning turned to Steve Yzerman after he won Stanley Cups in Detroit as both a player and an executive.

The best way to get a front-office job is to win. If your team dominates its way to a Stanley Cup title, all the better.

Ron Hextall should be the next to follow in that path. He's in his sixth season as the assistant GM in L.A., and the incredible success of the Los Angeles Kings validates an opinion that those around him already had: He's ready to build his own team.
