Ranking top 10 debuts for new QBs
New at your job? The learning curve is likely not as steep, and not as much is expected, as that of the new quarterbacks at high-profile college football programs around the country. And there are several.
We'll detail the top 10 quarterback debuts, now that a game or two is complete, including a couple that are playing against each other in Week 3: Saturday night's meeting between Notre Dame and Michigan State features two first-time starting QBs, the Irish's Everett Golson and the Spartans' Andrew Maxwell.
Both teams are 2-0, which is all that would seem to matter, but there have been early bumps in the road for those individuals. Golson was replaced for the final drive last week against Purdue. Maxwell (his teammates' tipped passes not helping) threw three interceptions in his debut as a starter. What's in store for them in their head-to-head matchup? More on that as we progress through the top 10, which includes one conference's stronghold on the list. (No, it's not the SEC.)
To hear veteran coordinator Noel Mazzone talk Tuesday (when I rudely interrupted his viewing of the World Series of Poker), Hundley is only knocking at the door of his potential. Mazzone said Hundley, a dual-threat redshirt freshman, is raw -- but he sure is talented. That was on display when the Bruins amassed 653 yards against Nebraska in the upset victory Saturday; Hundley was responsible for 362 of them.
What he seems to do more than anything else, beyond the gaudy statistics, is command his teammates' attention and respect. "He has a lot of maturity," Mazzone said, "and he'll only get more football maturity."
