TEAM OF THE WEEK: Connecticut
Jim Calhoun's Huskies snapped Notre Dame's 45-game homecourt win streak, 69-61. Jeff Adrien grabbed 19 boards and was the emotional leader, even screaming at teammates at one point in the heat of battle. I love the way Adrien fought hard and took charge, leading by example. A.J. Price and Jerome Dyson also came up with big-time performances. Price had 19 points earlier in the week when the Huskies beat another ranked opponent, Villanova, 89-83.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Calvin Haynes, Oregon State
The 6-2 sophomore guard put up impressive stats in road wins at California and Stanford. He hit seven-of-11 from the floor, scoring 21 points while grabbing seven boards at Berkeley. He made 10-of-15 from the field, finishing with 25 points at Palo Alto.
SHOCK OF THE WEEK: Virginia Tech over Wake Forest
There were several candidates, including Northwestern over Michigan in East Lansing, and Seton Hall over Georgetown. Number one went down to defeat as the Demon Deacons lost for the first time this season. Malcolm Delaney scored 21 points in the upset of numero uno Wake Forest, 78-71. A.D. Vassallo and Jeff Allen added 16 points apiece for the Hokies. They led nearly from the opening tip to the final buzzer, pushed their lead to 16 and made it stand up.
COACH OF THE WEEK: Craig Robinson, Oregon State
What a week it was! First came the inauguration of his brother-in-law, Barack Obama. Then came a pair of impressive road victories. The Beavers won 69-65 at California and 77-62 at Stanford. My friends, this is a team that did not win a Pac-10 game last season and Robinson has done an amazing job already turning around the fortunes of the program.
DIAPER DANDY OF THE WEEK: Jarrod Jones, Ball State
Why not reward a rebounder for a pair of solid performances. The 6-8 Jones grabbed double-figure rebounds in a pair of wins. He had 15 boards to go with 13 points in a win over Toledo. Earlier in the week he grabbed 11 rebounds in a victory over Western Michigan.
