Roundball chatter

• Does geographic logic ever prevail in teams moving, like TCU to the Big East? I can't blame TCU for wanting to be in the BCS mix. It is all about the money, baby! The Horned Frogs will be one of the favorites in football for sure, but what about basketball? The Big East will now have 17 teams playing hoops.

• How about a salute to UNLV basketball coach Lon Kruger! He has brought back excitement to the desert as the Runnin' Rebels are winning, baby! UNLV recently won the 76 Classic, beating a solid Virginia Tech team coached by Seth Greenberg in the finals. The Rebels will battle San Diego State and BYU in a tough Mountain West.

• I have to admit that Kansas has been better than I thought going into the season. Losing Cole Aldrich, Sherron Collins and Xavier Henry took away three star players. Coach Bill Self has seen his team come through, led by the Morris twins; Marcus and Markieff have been outstanding. The guard play, with Tyshawn Taylor has been very good too. Now with Josh Selby coming into the lineup, I believe the Jayhawks are now the team to beat in the tough Big 12.

• New Oregon coach Dana Altman had to be thrilled with his schedule for this week. After falling to Duke on Saturday, his next game was against Mike Anderson's Top 10 Missouri squad. At least both games were in the state of Oregon!

• The fact that we do not do jump balls when there is a held ball situation in college hoops drives me bananas! Does the rules committee really feel that this scenario is good for the game?

• I have been really impressed with the improvement in Duke guard Andre Dawkins' game. He used to be a jump shooter but he does so much more coming off the bench. He can defend, take it to the basket and also shoot from long distance. I know Coach K is proud of his growth as a player.

• I really feel the College Basketball Hall of Fame should honor Howard Garfinkel of Five-Star camp fame for all he has done for the sport. He has meant so much to coaches and players alike.

• Marquette has a very athletic team that can go up and down the floor. I love the job Buzz Williams has done there. This team will surprise some folks in the BIg East.

• I was so saddened to learn of the passing of Kentucky coach John Calipari's mom, Donna, as she courageously battled Cancer. We have to beat this dreaded disease. May she RIP.
