Roundball chatter

Each week I'll write about the sport I love, college basketball:

" Give Virginia a lot of credit for winning the ACC tournament championship with excellent defense and a balanced attack. Tony Bennett has done a great job with the Cavaliers.

" Kansas is a different team with Joel Embiid out of the lineup. He is a solid passer for a big man, and his role on defense is crucial for the Jayhawks. Bill Self hopes to have him back later in the NCAA tournament, and it will be a challenge for Kansas to advance without him.

" A few more announcements of 2014-15 in-season tournaments: The Legends Classic in Brooklyn has a tremendous field. Villanova, Michigan, VCU and Oregon will be in New York on Nov. 24-25. The 2K Sports Classic benefiting the Wounded Warriors project will include Syracuse, Iowa, California and Texas, with the semifinals and championship games at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 20-21.

" This is a tough time of year for coaches getting the Ziggy. Guys not returning to their respective schools include Buzz Peterson at UNC-Wilmington, Stan Heath at South Florida, Tom Herrion at Marshall, Cliff Warren at Jacksonville, Max Good at Loyola-Marymount, Jason Capel at Appalachian State and Louis Orr at Bowling Green. I wish them the best in the future.

" The NIT field includes St. John's, Minnesota, SMU, Florida State, Georgetown, Illinois, Arkansas, Clemson, LSU and Missouri.

" I feel for Larry Brown as his SMU Mustangs were left out of the field of 68. SMU had a case for an invite, as it beat Connecticut twice and Memphis once.
