Each week I'll write about the sport I love, college basketball:

• Mike Brey is like the Knute Rockne of college basketball coaching at South Bend. His Irish got another big win by beating Marquette over the weekend. I think Brey is a legitimate candidate for Big East Coach of the Year and even national Coach of tthe Year honors. When Tim Abromaitis went down for the season, did you really think the Irish could be one of the top teams in the Big East?

• The ACC may be better than some expected. North Carolina and Duke were the favorites going into the season. Florida State has been on a roll. Virginia is very tough, always playing tough defense. NC State is respectable. On any given night, teams like Clemson and Virginia Tech can challenge. The conference tournament could be very interesting.

• Iona College rewarded coach Tim Cluess with a well-deserved multi-year contract extension. The head coach has a job through June 2017 with his new deal. I really like what he has done with the Gaels program and his squad is still the favorite to win the MAAC.

• How about a salute to Kevin Murphy of Tennessee Tech, who scored 50 points in a game last week against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

• I believe that Kim English can play at the next level. Any time you can shoot the basketball from long range, it is a positive. Then add his rebounding skills at 6-5 and I think NBA scouts should take a good, long look at his ability.

• Washington State suffered a blow when 6-4 guard Faisal Aden suffered a torn ACL at Arizona. He is out for the rest of the season. Aden averaged 14.5 points per game, which placed him in the top 10 of the Pac-12 when he was injured.
