A daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:
" The Mavericks took a two-games-to-none leads against Miami, sparked by a 10-0 run to end the first half, with Jerry Stackhouse doing all of the scoring. Stackhouse's streak of 10 straight points was the longest for any player in an NBA Finals game since Isaiah Thomas scored 10 in a row during the Pistons' Game 1 victory over the Trail Blazers in 1990.
During that stretch, Stackhouse made three 3-point field goals in a span of 1:17. In the history of the NBA Finals, only one other player had ever hit three 3-point field goals in such a short span of time. In Game 4 of the 1990 Finals at Portland, Isiah hit a trio of 3s within 52 seconds during the third quarter of the Pistons' 112-109 win.
" Shaquille O'Neal scored only five points in 28 minutes of action in Game 2, his lowest point total in any of the 190 playoff games in which he's played during his NBA career. O'Neal was held to single-digit points in only two other playoff games. Shaq's previous low was seven points in 33 minutes in a Lakers' victory over Houston during the first round in 2004; he was held to eight points in 24 minutes in a Game 3 loss to the Bulls in the first round of this year's playoffs.
" David Ortiz stepped to the plate with two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Red Sox trailing by two runs. There was joy in Beantown when the Mighty Papi, down to his last strike, belted a game-winning home run. The last player to hit a two-out walkoff homer with his team trailing by at least two runs was Montreal's Brad Wilkerson (July 17, 2003 vs. the Giants). Wilkerson's game-ender, like Papi's, was a two-strike homer.
Ortiz has at least one game-ending home run in each of the last five seasons (2002-2006), the longest streak for any player since Fred McGriff hit walkoff homers in each of five straight years from 1993-97 (for the Padres and Braves).
" Both teams scored early and often in the Cardinals' 7-5 victory at Milwaukee. It was the first game since 2003 in which both teams scored in each of the first four innings. There have been only 17 such games in the majors since 1900; Sunday's game was the only one of them in which neither team scored after the fourth inning.
" The Athletics completed a sweep at Yankee Stadium with Huston Street notching a save in each of the three games. Street retired all nine batters he faced in the series, setting down the side in order in the ninth inning of each game. Over the last three seasons (since 2004) the only other pitcher to earn a "perfect save" (retiring every batter he faced) in each game of a series sweep (of at least three games) is Joe Nathan (vs. Tampa Bay at the Metrodome in August 2005).
" The Mets posted a 15-2 win at Arizona without the aid of a home run. No team had scored that many runs in a game in which it didn't homer since Seattle did it in a 16-6 win at Anaheim on Sept. 22, 2004. No National League team had scored 15 runs in a game without a big fly since the Giants did it on April 9, 2003 (15-11 over the Padres at San Francisco). The Mets matched their franchise record for runs in a game in which they were homerless (15-6 over the Giants on Aug. 27, 1997 at Shea Stadium).
" The Braves' loss coupled with New York's victory dropped Atlanta 10 games behind the division-leading Mets. Since the Braves' began their run of division titles in 1991, there's been only one other day on which Atlanta trailed its division leader by 10 games: Through games of July 22, 1993, the Braves were in second place in the NL West, 10 games behind the Giants.
" The Mariners' Felix Hernandez threw only 94 pitches in a complete-game victory at Los Angeles, nine days after Jamie Moyer needed only 93 pitches to complete a Seattle victory over the Royals. The only other AL pitcher to throw as few as 94 pitches in a nine-inning, complete-game effort this season is Toronto's Roy Halladay (89 pitches in an 8-1 win at Tampa Bay on May 13).
" Sandy Alomar drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning pinch-hit single in the Dodgers' 6-5 victory at Colorado. Alomar has come to the plate as a pinch-hitter 65 times in his career, but Sunday marked only the second time that he drove in a game-winning run in that role (the other was on July 31, 2003 for the White Sox).
The Rockies' loss was their first this year in a game in which they led at the end of the eighth inning. The Phillies are the only National League team that is still undefeated under those circumstances (they are 29-0 when leading going into the ninth).
" The Phillies were shut out for the first time this season in a 6-0 loss at Washington. With Philadelphia scratched from the list, the Yankees are now the only team in the majors to score a run in every game this season. The Dodgers haven't been shut out in their last 34 games (since May 4); that's now the longest current streak of its kind for any National League team.
The Phillies played 62 games before their first shutout loss of the year. Over the past 80 seasons (1926 to 2005), Philadelphia began only one year with a longer streak of consecutive games without being shut out. In 1993, the Phillies scored at least one run in each of their first 158 games before being shut out in two of their final four regular-season games.
" Ivan Rodriguez drove in five runs in the Tigers' 10-5 win at Toronto. It was the third 5-RBI game for Pudge this season, the most for any player in the majors. Over the last nine seasons (since 1998), the only other catcher with three such games in a season was Javy Lopez (three five-RBI games in 2003).
" Troy Glaus and Shea Hillenbrand hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning. It was the sixth pair of back-to-back home runs for the Blue Jays this year (Glaus has been involved in five of those occurrences); that's the highest total for any team in the majors. Toronto batters went belly-to-belly only four times all of last season.
" The Pirates earned a 7-5 victory at San Francisco, erasing a 5-2 deficit during a five-run eighth. Pittsburgh's last road victory in a game in which it trailed by at least three runs in the eighth inning or later was on June 10, 2001 (at Minnesota). Since then, the only teams that haven't won a game in that fashion are the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks. Toronto's last road win in which it came back from a three-run deficit that that late in the game was on July 7, 1999 (at Baltimore). Arizona hasn't had such a victory since July 30, 1999 (at Los Angeles).
" The Devil Rays hit six home runs, each in a different inning, in their 8-2 win at Kansas City. It was only the third game in the last 10 seasons in which a team homered in six different innings. The Athletics did it in 2003, as did the Astros in 2004.
" The Netherlands defeated Serbia and Montenegro 1-0 for its first-ever World Cup victory in a match in which it scored fewer than two goals. The Netherlands' previous record when scoring fewer than two goals in the World Cup was 0-6-7 (i.e., six losses, seven ties).
Or, to put it another way, this was the first time in 33 World Cup matches that the Netherlands made a single goal stand up for a 1-0 victory.
" It was no surprise that Arjen Robben was Man of the Match in the Netherlands' victory: He may have been the "Man of the World" during World Cup qualifying. The Netherlands outscored its opponents 16-0, with Robben on the field during the six qualifiers in which he played.
" When the clock struck 68:00 in its loss to the Netherlands, Serbia and Montenegro had trailed for a longer period against the Netherlands than it did in its 10 qualification matches combined (49 minutes).
" Omar Bravo, playing in his first World Cup match, scored Mexico's first two goals in its 3-1 victory over Iran. Only one other Mexican player scored twice in his World Cup debut: Luis Hernandez in a 3-1 win over Korea in 1998.
