A daily glance inside the numbers from the world of sports:
" San Antonio beat Golden State by 40 points on Dec. 4 (129-89) and by 37 points on Monday night (126-89). It's the first time in 10 years that one NBA team had two wins by 37 or more points against another NBA team in the same season. In 1996-97 Portland had two such wins over Denver (by 40 and 44 points) and Seattle did it to Golden State (40- and 37-point wins).
" The Spurs have now won 50 or more games for eight straight seasons. That's the fourth-longest streak in NBA history. The Lakers had 12 straight 50-win seasons from 1979-80 to 1990-91. Boston had a 10-season streak from 1958-59 to 1967-68 and a nine-season streak from 1979-80 to 1987-88.
" Carlos Boozer had 41 points and 16 rebounds in Utah's win over Washington. Boozer is only the second player in the NBA this season with at least 40 points and 15 rebounds in a game. Amare Stoudemire did it on Feb. 25 (43 points, 16 rebounds). Karl Malone and Truck Robinson are the only other players in Utah franchise history to have a 40/15 game. Malone did it nine times for the Jazz while Robinson did it in November 1978 while the team was still in New Orleans.
" The Celtics are now 19-27 (.413) and are averaging 98.5 points in the 46 games that Paul Pierce has appeared in this season, compared to only 2-22 (.083) in the 24 games Pierce has missed. Everyone knows a .413 winning percentage is nothing to brag about, but that winning percentage over 70 games -- which is how many Boston has played this season -- would give the Celtics a record of 29-41, which would be only three games out of a playoff spot in the NBA's Eastern Conference.
" Over the last three weeks, the Knicks -- supposedly pursuing a playoff berth -- have now played four home games against opponents with a winning percentage below .460 -- and they have lost them all. They lost to the Sonics (whose record entering that game was 24-35), the Hornets (28-36), the Trail Blazers (27-40) and now the Magic (32-38). It's the second time in the last 20 years that the Knicks lost four straight home games against teams with a winning percentage below .460 entering the game. They also had a four-game streak late last season.
" Dwight Howard had 14 rebounds in Orlando's win over the Knicks. It was the ninth straight game of at least 10 rebounds for Howard, tying a career long. Shaquille O'Neal is the only other player in Orlando history to have nine straight games of at least 10 rebounds. Shaq had six such streaks, with his longest for the Magic being 18 games in 1993-94.
" The Suns-Grizzlies game Monday night was the 78th in NBA history matching a team at least 35 games over .500 against a team at least 35 games under .500. The team at least 35 games under .500 has won only seven of the 78 such games.
" The Hawks (32 fouls) were whistled for 18 more fouls than the Heat (14) Monday night. That matched the largest difference in personal fouls for two teams in an NBA game this season. On Jan. 17, Portland (33) committed 18 more fouls than Cleveland (15).
" Pau Gasol scored 20 points had grabbed 10 rebounds in another Memphis loss. Gasol has now had six straight 20/10 games, breaking a franchise record. Stromile Swift had five straight 20/10 games in March 2003.
" A Miami win and a Washington loss catapulted the Heat into first place in the NBA's Southeast Division. It's the first time Miami is alone in first place this season. Washington had been in first place (or tied for first place) for the last 69 days.
" Two significant winning streaks continued tonight. Miami has now won 11 straight home games against Atlanta, and Detroit has won 11 straight home games against Denver.
" The Ducks lost in Detroit on Monday night 1-0. Anaheim has not scored more than three goals in any of its last 22 games at Joe Louis Arena. It's the longest such streak for any NHL team on the road against a particular opponent since the Seals scored three or fewer goals in each of 22 consecutive games in St. Louis from December 1967 to January 1974.
" Dominik Hasek was the winning goaltender in the NHL's only game Monday night. It was the ninth 1-0 victory of Hasek's career, third-most among active goaltenders, behind Martin Brodeur (19) and Ed Belfour (16).
" Daisuke Matsuzaka threw five no-hit innings for the Red Sox Monday. Dice-K is the second pitcher this spring to throw five or more no hit innings, joining Jeff Suppan, who did it on March 15 (also five innings). The last Red Sox pitcher to allow no hits in a spring training appearance of at least five innings was Frank Viola on April 2, 1993. Viola pitched seven no-hit innings that day.
