Unlike previous seasons of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," there are no clear favorites to win this fall's mirrorball trophy.
On Monday, in the Season 13 opener, the two athletes -- Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) and Hope Solo -- had mixed results. Neither likely will become the seventh athlete to capture the crown.
World Peace, who dressed like basketball wild man Dennis Rodman up to the gold hair, bombed with partner Peta Murgatroyd. World Peace had no rhythm on the floor -- it was almost unwatchable -- and scored 14 points out of 30, the worst showing of any of the 12 competitors. Judge Len Goodman said of World Peace's dancing: "Your footwork was atrocious."
For soccer star Solo, she fared much better, scoring 21 out of 30 with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Solo looked stiff and wasn't relaxed, and the judges noticed. That's always a normal refrain early in the show's season. Judge Bruno Tonioli doesn't totally rule out Solo lasting a few weeks, saying, "You've got a bright future."
The two front-runners are Chynna Phillips/Tony Dovolani and J.R. Martinez/Karina Smirnoff, both scoring 22 points. Phillips looked graceful in her moves and should survive for several weeks but needs a stronger following to pull this off. Martinez, who is a war hero and now an actor, has the audience behind him and will also stay around for a long time and might actually take the show in a new direction -- not just being a popularity contest.
On Tuesday, it's the first elimination. Lakers fans should keep World Peace around for a little while, so expect reality star Rob Kardashian (16) or model Elisabetta Canalis (15) to be sent home.
