On Saturday night, Australian stunt rider Robbie Maddison and U.S. snowmobile champion Levi LaVallee will attempt a simultaneous world record-breaking jump over 300 feet of water in downtown San Diego for ESPN's 2011 "Red Bull: New Year. No Limits" event.
Maddison will try to set a world record for distance jumped on a motorcycle, looking to eclipse the existing record of 391 feet. LaVallee will attempt to break his own record of 361 feet and set a world record for distance jumped on a snowmobile.
"This is how I get my kicks. It's my job," said the 30-year-old Maddison, who first broke the world motorcycle jumping record in 2007. "I love facing my fears. I love pushing the limits."
Maddison, one of the top freestyle motorcyclists in the world, has been living on the edge since 2005. He has broken nearly 30 bones and will continue to push the limits.
"I don't know if it's a smart idea to keep doing this, but it's who I am. I'm not going to stop," Maddison said. "I've gotten wiser with my decisions and work harder to make those jumps. I'm doing these things to put food on the table."
For LaVallee, the jump is more about redemption. Last year, LaVallee was injured during practice for the New Year's Eve jump event.
"It's like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that is happening twice. Robbie is a legend on New Year's, so having him here to lead the way will lighten the load for me," said the 29-year-old LaVallee, who has won seven medals at the Winter X Games. "Last year was such a disappointment that I'm glad a get a chance to do it again. This is pretty gnarly."
This year's "New Year. No Limits" event will air live on Saturday at 11 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPNHD and ESPN3.
"There really will be no limits," Maddison said. "Planes can fly far. Who is to say that a motorcycle can't do that at some point."
