Andruw Jones:
Hits game-winning HR (his MLB-leading 44th). Given the Braves' success (and with such a young team), the leader in ATL deserves the NL MVP.
The Lead Item
Two Words For You:

Put away your books! Pop quiz for the college football season's opening weekend:

1. "Did You See That?!":
Which game will everyone be talking about on Tuesday?

Boise St-GA (Sat, 5:30, ESPN)
BSU doesn't even need to win, just make it close. (Answer: Don't be surprised when they DO win; their O is unlike anything Georgia has ever seen.)

2. Whose BCS hopes will end?

Miami-FSU loser (Mon, 8, ABC)
And both teams are breaking in new QBs, which could keep it ugly. (Answer: Neither team's year; it's just that FSU's ends first.)

3. Irish eyes: Smile or cry?

Notre Dame-Pitt (Sat, 8, ABC)
To justify fan expectations, Charlie Weis has even more pressure to win than Spurrier. (Answer: Despite Wannstedt as coach, Pitt is no punchline.)

4. How does Urban Renewal go?

Florida-Wyoming (Sat, 6, PPV)
Meyer gets the pub for the spread offense, but his real trick is training the team to close out games. (Answer: Better than Spurrier's.)

5. What's a darkhorse upset?

VA Tech-NC St (Sun, 7, ESPN2)
Wolfpack has a tough D, will keep it close and pull a shocker. (Answer: Well, the upset won't be the cupcakes playing most of the Top 5!)

6. How many TDs can SC score?

USC-Hawaii (Sat, 7, ESPN2)
Wait: No one said there'd be any math! (Answer: Against a porous Hawaii D on a glorified recruiting trip? As many as they want to.)

More big games? See Big 5.

Spurrier's Debut
Sure, Carolina won. And, sure, there were some nifty "Cock and Fire" passing plays at the beginning.

But he was playing Central Florida, not exactly a powerhouse. And by the end, his team was showing they are not a strong finisher.

Upshot: Even with a fan-boosting win, it doesn't bode well for the SEC season.

Tedy Bruschi: "I'm definitely playing next year."
Keegan Herring: Ariz St frosh RB rushes for record 134 yds
James Blake: Advances at US Open to set up match vs. Nadal
Gilles Muller: Andy Roddick mojo-stealer LOSES to Ginepri
Pre-game prayer at Air Force: Ends due to new AFA policy
Kevin Brown: Put on 60-day DL; season is over for NYY dud
Katrina Update
Any fan watching coverage on TV this week could have told the NFL that there was no way the Saints were going to be able to play in New Orleans this season -- at all.

The NFL finally figured that out and will likely shift the team to Baton Rouge (or San Antonio) for the season. (Meanwhile, I can't believe the Saints were even able to take the field Thursday night vs. the Raiders.)

MLB Wrap
Weekend's Best: Carpenter vs. Clemens (Saturday) in a good old-fashioned Cy Young showdown; in the AL, it's Yankees at A's in a playoff-caliber matchup.

NL Wild: Mets are the big dud, losing 2 of 3 to the Phillies, who are now .5 GA HOU (2.5 GA NY). Will the East batter each other into an Astros W.C.? (Wknd's biggie: Mets-Marlins)

AL West: Angels pull even with A's in 3-0 W, starring Ervin Santana. Everything between now and their rematch Sept. 26 is about Wild Card posturing; after that series, one team won't need it.

NFL Pre: Last Ones!
This final week is brutal...

DET/BUF: Jeff Garcia Show?
IND/CIN: Where's Corey Simon?
KC/STL: Priest? LJ? Unclear
MIN/SEA: Sit Daunte (really!)
DEN/ARI: Broncos' RB status

CFB 2K5: Books!
Quickie CFB Book Club: I got a copy of the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia, and I immediately lost several hours, with many more to come this fall.

Not only is it the be-all, end-all reference if you're a fan, but I giddily got to re-live, week-by-week, Northwestern's glorious climb up the Top 25 in 2005. Priceless.

Quickie 50/50: The Tour Ends! Fri: OK ("Boomer Sooner!"); Sat: AL ("Rammer Jammer!"); Sun: WI ("Fifth Quarter!"); Mon: DC ("Representation!")

US Open: Diminutive Agassi defeats giant Karlovic. Watching Andre right now is like watching a master class in tennis technique.

NBA Free: The Bulls lock up F/C Tyson Chandler, the poster guy for the team's upside (and inconsistency). But $63 million (6 years) is $63 million.

Mascot Update: Utah appeals NCAA nickname ban, wants decision before Friday's game. The pressure's on the NCAA for their controversial initiative.

Top prep FB prospect Myron Rolle picks Fla St. The DB said he loves the coaches and the academics. (Please, save those punchlines.)

Yes, there WILL be a new edition of the Daily Quickie on Monday (Labor Day)! Be sure to check it out!
