Nolan Ryan was 42 years old when the Rangers signed him as a free agent in 1989. Although hardly washed up at the time (he had led the National League in strikeouts with the Houston Astros in 1987 and 1988), Ryan cemented his status as a Texas legend during his five seasons with the Rangers.
In 1989, he struck out 301 batters. In 1990, he pitched his sixth career no-hitter and won his 300th game. In 1991, he pitched his seventh no-hitter. In 1992, he coached the Dallas Cowboys to a Super Bowl championship. In 1993, he beat up Robin Ventura. It doesn't get any bigger in Texas than that.
