Rise: He was drafted second overall in 2001, made the All-Star team and won 18 games at age 22, and helped the Cubs get to one game away from the World Series in 2003.

Fall: Thanks to a series of injuries, he was out of the major leagues after the 2006 season and has bounced around an independent league and the minors.

The latest: He signed a minor league contract with the Reds this past winter and started 2013 pitching for Cincinnati's Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats.
