Youth Rodeo

We first stumbled upon the kids rodeo while attending the Minnesota State Fair. In front of a packed coliseum, kids were bull-riding, and we were in awe of their fearlessness. From that day forward, we knew the youth rodeo was something we wanted to photograph. At the Junior High State Rodeo Finals in St. Peter, Minn., children from grades six through 12 compete in a three-day event that ranges from ribbon roping to bull riding, with awards for cowboy and cowgirl of the year. The winners of each event are invited to the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Gallup, N.M.

Tyler Scheevel blasts out of the gate and competes in a roping event. Scheevel was attempting to rope a calf.
