The "Thrilla in Manila," the third installment of boxing's most famed trilogy, was also the best of the series, an all-out war between bitter rivals for the heavyweight championship. Ali dominated early, Frazier came on in the middle rounds and by the later rounds they were inflicting inhuman punishment on each other. They were in bad shape when Eddie Futch, Frazier's revered trainer, compassionately stopped the fight after the 14th round. Ali, who retained the title, said it was the closest thing to death he'd ever known.
