SMU will be without 6-foot-11 center Yanick Moreira for the foreseeable future after he suffered a partially torn MCL in his left knee during practice Thursday, coach Larry Brown said Friday on the ESPNU College Basketball podcast.
Brown said he's hopeful Moreira will be out only three weeks but mentioned the Mustangs could be without the center for upwards of six weeks.
Moreira had five points and four rebounds as the Mustangs (11-3, 1-1 American) beat UConn 74-65 last Saturday. SMU next plays at Louisville on Sunday.
"Yanick won't need surgery,'' Brown said. "Now some guys who should have played more will have to step up. Cannen Cunningham and Ben Moore are two guys who will have to fill in.
"It's next man up. Injuries are part of the game. Louisville lost a key player in Chane Behanan. It's a chance for other people to play more minutes. It can be hard to manage minutes when you have too many guys.''
